APOBA to sponsor 2017 Pipe Organ Encounter Technical event for young people
Members of the American Guild of Organists likely know about the Guild's Pipe Organ Encounter program, where young folk from around the country attend Guild-sponsored one-week teaching events during the summer months, to study organ with well-known teachers.
What many may not know is that there is also a POE-T; the T stands for "Tech". During these events, young persons, regardless of keyboard skills, can attend a week of instruction in a pipe organ builder's workshop, to learn about how pipe organs, and all their various parts, are made. Instruction is given in the building of chests, voicing of pipes, wiring, mechanical systems in tracker organs, etc. Instead of organists, teachers are actually pipe organ builders!
APOBA proudly supports the Guild's sponsorship of these events by providing a stipend of $2,000 each for regular POE's, and $3,000 for POE Techs.
The next POE Tech is being held at the workshop of Parkey OrganBuilders, Berkeley Lake, GA, near Atlanta, beginning July 9, 2017. The program is a full week, the same as a regular POE, and while some playable instruments will be visited and inspected, students will spend most of their time with hands-on work in the shop.
20 spots are available on a first come basis. We at APOBA would love to see a full load of students, and it is not too early to start thinking about attending. Application is the same as for regular POE events.
AGO helps train the church musicians of the future; APOBA wants to make sure instruments for those musicians continue to be built and maintained.
